Plyometrics are essential in building explosion via the quick twitch muscles. If you aren't doing something like this you probably wont be getting any faster or jumping higher anytime soon. (In my humble opinion of course)
An off-season strength session with the college guys includes plenty of dumbbell work. They love a good upper body day. (we kill our legs a lot lol)

You dont make a run to a third straight State Tournament with a birth in the championship game without being consistent in all aspects. We were religious about our routines and the results showed up night in and night out.
Sometimes you have to move somethings around to see things more clearly. Most days I choose to move some weight, clears the head right up!
